They don’t reproduce these, so you have to make one out of two.

Noice. Reminds me of the Willys tailgates.

Mercury made trucks?

I had to make a new bottom 3 1/2" for the tailgate on the Ranchero. I then proceeded to accidentally warp the whole thing, and only recently managed to pull it mostly back out. A donor would have been preferable, but cheapo me didn’t want to spend $500 on one from eBay...

They were Fords, sold as Mercury’s in the Canadian market. Basically identical trucks with different badges.

I love Mercury pickups and dream of bringing one home every time I go up to Canada. They’re just as cool as the Fords of the same era but +10. Close enough to a Ford for people to glance by, but obscure enough for everyone to do a double take and say, “Whoa, that’s a Mercury?!”

Still see them on the road around here, the odd Fargo as well

I figured they were just rebadges of Ford products, I just never knew they did it for trucks.

The areas where the hinges attached, I had to remake from scratch. It wasn’t just the outer skin that was toast, but the inner as well. I figure it’ll look great once I fill it all in with like a pound and a half of body solder, but it was a much greater fiasco than I expected.

I’m guessing you’re in Canada, where I’ve seen quite a few as well. South of the border though I’ve maybe seen a couple in my lifetime. Fords are so common down here that hardly anyone bothers importing a Mercury (I’m assuming that’s why at least). Personally, I would much rather have a Mercury over a Ford, just do to the fact that I never see them.

Fargo trucks, I feel like I’ve heard of these before, but I had to look it up anyway. Rebadged Dodges! I love these kind of single market vehicles that are identical to other markets apart from badges. Makes me wonder why they felt like they had to rename them as Mercurys or Fargos, instead of keeping them Fords and Dodges, and why didn’t they think that a Mercury pickup would sell in America? Add that to the list of things I should look up.

I never really knew until I started taking annual fishing trips to Canada. The first time I saw one I was very confused until I looked it up. Funny thing is they sold both Ford and Mercury pickups in Canada, but the Mercs were never sold in the U.S. Another example that Dash-doorhandle reminded me of is Dodge/Fargo, same story.

Meteor rancheros, and Fargos also Maple Leaf Truck, which was a Chevy. that’s all I can think of for trucks, lots of oddball canuck cars though, Have friends with Beaumonts, Iraqi taxis and Meteors. I owned that Iraqi taxi briefly, it was a fun car.

Emblems and grilles are easy enough to come by, but nice gates are not. especially unibody ones. but that’s all you’d need to build one. That and a whole Ford.

Maple Leaf Truck, I’m not sure it gets more Canadian haha. Can’t say I’ve ever seen any of those, but I’m certainly going to keep my eye out when I’m up there this June.

I can imagine, Ford gates are hard enough to come by. I’ve thought about buying Merc. trim, emblems, and gate for my ‘50 F3, but it wouldn’t be a “true” Mercury.

I’ve been taking a week long fishing trip for going on 16 years now.... So you can say I’ve been there a couple times. I’ve never been outside of our normal route though so I haven’t really seen that much of Canada. I know that highway awfully damn well though.

a nice new reproduction ford gate was cannibalized for this rusty merc one. 50 would just be a single walled stamping wouldn’t it? could probably find one of those, out west that is.

I love it, and I look forward to going every year. It’s the one week a year where I can forget about nearly everything and just relax.

Yep, the ‘50 is just a thick single wall. Mine’s in good shape apart from a dent. The tougher part is the F2 and F3 used a different tailgate than the F1, and are harder to find due to F2's and F3's being; 1.) Less popular and less common than the F1, and 2.) More commonly used as stakebed or chassis cab trucks instead of express boxes (pickup boxes). I’m sure there’s quite a few out there though because Ford made a ton. Luckily I’ve never had a reason to look though.
